What exactly are Figments? They’re inhabitants of the imagination, that strange, ungovernable part of the brain that has no boundaries and knows no limits. So, however much you want these lovable little guys, with their topknots and snorkel noses, to be real – they’re not. They exist only in the mind’s eye which is situated just behind the hippocampus and slightly to the right of the almond-shaped amygdala. Unless you’re a southpaw, then it’s on the left.
Figments play a role in several Long Dog samplers where there’s a tiny, pear-shaped hole to be filled. They like Florentine biscuits, coloring pencils and a small glass of Grand Marnier after their Christmas lunch.
There is only one brief moment each year when Figments are said to become visible to “believers”. It’s midnight on All Hallows Eve, when the veil between this world and the next is at its most transparent. So, when you’re nibbling on a soul cake while on the lookout for ghosts, don’t be surprised if a little Long Dog Figment suddenly pops up and says, “Hi, hi!”
